Mashemeji: Gor and AFC ready for Sunday derby

Record Kenyan Premier League Champions Gor Mahia will face erstwhile rivals AFC Leopards in their 93rd Mashemeji Derby Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi.
Both teams are enjoying a good run in the FKF PL with AFC having won three of their past consecutive encounters while Gor Mahia remains unbeaten in five games and has won two matches on the bounce.
Gor’s imperious run has seen them move to third place on the log on 23 points, a point behind league leaders Tusker.
AFC Leopards sits 7th with 17 points.
Both coaches Gor Mahia’s Jonathan Mckinstry and his AFC Leopards counter part Patrick Aussems will be taking charge of their maiden Mashemeji Derby.
The two sides first met on May 5th 1968 and have been sworn rivals ever since with Gor Mahia enjoying a good record of 7 wins in their most recent meetings.
Its a record that Ausemms will be keen to upset on Sunday.
"Beating Kenya Police gave us the much-needed confidence boost going into the derby. We are eager to break our jinx in the derby and beat Gor because it has been a long time since we won a match against them,” he said.
Gor Mahia head coach Jonathan Mckinstry is hopeful his side will keep the record intact albeit in challenging atmosphere.
"I'm glad the players we brought in from the youth team are already gelling with their senior teammates and getting things done’’, Mckinstry said.
The match is set to kick off at 3PM.
Bandari will seek to regain their campaign back on track when they host Nairobi City Stars at Mbaraki Grounds in the other of the two matches scheduled Sunday.
On Saturday leaders Tusker will face Kenya Police at Kasarani while Ulinzi will be up against second placed Nzoia Sugar at Ulinzi Complex.
Wazito will host KCB in Muhoroni while Sofapaka will be at Kasarani Annex against visiting strugglers Vihiga Bullets. Kariobangi Sharks will face Bidco in an early kick off at Kasarani Annex while Mathare United will seek to make it two wins from two games against Kakamega Homeboyz at Utalii Grounds.Posta Rangers will face Talanta at Thika Stadium.
