Collins Injera has retired from international rugby after a career spanning 17 years.

Kenya rugby sevens legend Collins Injera has hung his boots after an illustrious career spanning two and a half decades.

Injera who scored a total of 279 tries at the World Rugby sevens circuit announced his retirement via a statement on Tuesday.

Injera ranked second on the top try scorers in the world series was a key member of the Shujaa team that went on to win its first and only circuit leg in Singapore in 2016 alongside his brother Humphrey Khayange.

The 36-year-old is second to Britain's Dan Norton in the rugby sevens World Series try-scoring charts with 271 touchdowns.

He made his debut in 2008-2009 going on to score a total of 42 tries to announce himself on the global stage.

The son of a professor, he made his international debut in 2005 and went on to score tries at a regular frequency, though he is more widely known for what he once did after one of his touchdowns.

At the London Sevens in 2015, Injera celebrated his 200th try by pulling a marker pen from his socks and scrawling his name on a television camera, as tennis players often do, and unwittingly ruined a lens valued at about Ksh.10 million.

He was recently inducted into the Fiji Hall of Fame.

, Injera said in his farewell statement: "Everything must come to an end someday.  I have always said I will know it’s time because my body will tell me. And for the past few months, it has really ‘spoken’ to me so, finally, I have decided to listen to it."

He added: “As hard as this is for me, after 17 years of literal blood, sweat and tears, it’s time to step away from this great game that has given me so much more than I could ever ask for. Thank you, Lord, for giving me the strength, opportunities, and protection to be able to play the game I really love for this long."

"Those days, weeks, and sometimes months that you have endured without my presence as I was busy chasing my dream across the globe are finally over.
