An unhealthy diet and physical inactivity have been linked to various lifestyle diseases but an active lifestyle could prevent that



Kenneth Okoth, MP Kibra, shared a tweet about his battle with cancer recently and it has reignited the debate on cancer and in general lifestyle diseases amid the messages of support.

Lifestyle diseases have been described as diseases associated with the way a person or a group of people live. Cancer, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and obesity are some of the prevalent lifestyle diseases. In a research article written by Frontiers in Public Health, the article linked an unhealthy diet and physical inactivity among the key modifiable risk factors for non-communicable diseases (also known as Lifestyle diseases).

Speaking at our studios Nicholas Shiribwa of Shiwan adventures spoke at length during a “Good Morning Kenya” interview about the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle and the diseases that come with it.

One of the most prevalent arguments that people use for not participating in any form of exercise is “I’m too busy” or “I don’t have enough time.” Nicholas argues that with a well thought out daily or weekly schedule, you could surprise yourself by finding if not an hour, thirty minutes to do a simple workout or do an active household chore. It is important to note that if your body is unhealthy, it becomes a liability.

2. Plan for a weekly outdoor activity

This doesn’t have to be complicated; you can choose to take a long walk, cycle around your neighbourhood or go swimming.
