Student dies as pit latrine collapses in Machakos County

The latrine is said to have collapsed due to heavy rains witnessed in the area.

A student was killed and another injured after a pit latrine caved in at Muisuni High school, Kangundo in Machakos County.

Confirming the incident, Muisuni High School director, Robert Thyaka, said the latrine collapsed due to heavy rains witnessed in the area.

The injured student was taken to Kangundo Hospital for treatment before later being transferred to a Machakos hospital for CT scan albeit in stable condition.

Kangundo OCPD, Benjamin Ong’ombe, said the body of the deceased has since been transferred to the Kangundo Hospital mortuary.

Elsewhere, sixteen private schools that were operating illegally in Matungu sub-county in Kakamega County have been closed.

Area Deputy County Commissioner, Jacob Awuor, said  a committee set up to look into operations of public and private schools in the area found out  the schools were operating without fulfilling the requirements of the Ministry of Education.

Awuor who was speaking during celebrations to mark Mashujaa day said pupils who were learning from the schools were admitted to nearby public schools.

He said 29 others have been put on notice to improve their  facilities by the beginning of next term failure to which they would face closure.
