Suspected drug trafficker arrested at Mombasa airport

A suspected drug trafficker has been arrested with heroin valued at more than Sh10 million at Moi International Airport in Mombasa.

The suspect, identified as Mohamed Jibril Ali, 51, had concealed the drugs in his shoe soles.

Mombasa County Commander Peterson Maelo said Ali was traveling to Dubai and was about to board a Rwandese airline when he was intercepted and arrested.

Maelo said anti-narcotic detectives have taken over the case and handed over the drug sample to the Government Chemist for further analysis.

He said the suspect will be arraigned in Court once investigation is completed. The arrest comes as Coastal region Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa announced that a special unit has been formed to enhance the war on drugs in the Coastal region.

Marwa said the officers drawn from anti-narcotic unit are collecting crucial evidence to apprehend drug barons.

He added that the officers are under instruction to firmly deal with drug cartels in the region.

The government has intensified the war on illicit drugs and it recently extradited to America two sons of slain drug baron Ibrahim Akasha to face drug related charges.
