Why Kenyans online are not happy with Sauti Sol
How it started
On Saturday, December 19th (Last week), Sauti Sol were set to perform at the Waterfront, Karen. The event was marketed as “Sol Saturday” with the organisers only offering a limited number of tickets owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Announcing the event on December 1st the band said, “We would’ve loved to invite everyone to SOL SATURDAY but due to the pandemic, only a few can attend. No gate tickets. Limited advance tickets available for 18 days.”
However, with tickets bought and some vendors already on en route to set up, it was announced that the event was cancelled.
Sauti Sol explain the cancellation
On the day of the concert, Sauti Sol released a statement explaining the cancellation. The statement read in part, “We were recently made aware that the event size doesn’t comply with Kenyan COVID -19 protocols and regulations. together with the promoters Tukutane Entertainment limited and Masshouse group limited, we tried hard to mitigate the situation, however, we could not come to an agreement on the best way forward. With the recent uptick in confirmed infections and deaths around the world, we cannot in good conscience recklessly endanger your well being. We shall be refunding the promoters, Tukutane Entertainment limited and Masshouse Group limited the full performance fees duly paid to us without delay so that they can provide swift refunds to you.”

The statement made clear that they were cancelling due to COVID-19 regulations not being followed.
Vendors speak out
This week, however, some vendors like the owner of Kari’s Kitchen have shared their stories and losses due to the event being cancelled. According to Kari’s Kitchen, Sauti Sol cancelled the concert because they were not happy with the stage design and refused to back down even after the organisers assured them that they could get the stage ready and move the event to Sunday.
This explanation differed from the one Sauti Sol had given and has since stirred outrage online.
The allegations made by Kari’s Kitchen have since sparked debate online.
So Sauti Sol got paid 30000 dollars and still refused to perform because of the stage not being upto their standards… Haha

Sauti Sol are definitely amazing and a pride. Whatever happened here deserved a more professional approach. A tech rider(Artiste requirements sent pre event and is part of the contract) should include stage specifications sound etc. cancelling was unnecessary

I don’t think this is about ‘cancelling Sauti Sol. ‘ Just asking for a little accountability and an explanation for lying about the event’s cancellation.

I can't wait for the full story to finally emerge about the Sauti Sol concert that never was.
There's a lot of half stories and hearsay going on.
