Tokyo Olympics: Peris Jepchirchir wins women’s marathon gold


Kenya’s Peris Jepchirchir won the women’s marathon   at Tokyo Olympic Games after finishing first in 2:27.20 ahead of her compatriot and world record holder Brigid Kosgey who finished second 2:27.36.

USA’s Molly Seidel finished third 2:27.46.The race tested athletes endurance with the sweltering heat in Saporo winnowing the field, leading to dropping out of a number of runners among them Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich, Ethiopian Zeineba Yimer, and Israel’s Lonah Chemtai Salpeter.

Two-time world half marathon champion Jepchirchir pulled away  from Brigid Kosgei at the 40km mark  enroute to her  2:27:20finish. America’s Molly Siedel held on to take bronze.


It is Kenya’s third Gold Medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo with two more finals scheduled today : the women’s 10,000m final and the men’s 1,500m final.
