Two Cuban doctors abducted by Al-Shabaab militants in Mandera

Two Cuban doctors have been abducted by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Mandera and a police officer killed during the incident.

The police officer attached to guard them was reportedly shot dead by the militants who drove off with the medics, raising fresh security concerns in the region that borders troubled Somalia.

Local authorities say they believe the abductors are still within the border with the medics and have launched a search using police and the military.

Al-Shabaab terrorists are notorious for targeting foreigners at border towns, having taken off with an Italian aid worker from Lamu who is yet to be found.

Meanwhile, Police spokesperson Charles Owino says they are interrogating a driver of the vehicle in which two Cuban doctors were in before being abducted. Says they suspect the medics are been taken to Somalia.

The vehicle has been recovered.
