Two children perished on Monday afternoon after a fire destroyed several rental houses at Nanyuki’s Majengo estate.
The two children aged between one and a half and four years are said to have perished in the house with most neighbours who could have rescued them having been away from their homes at the time of the incident.
According to Mary Muthoni, a neighbor, efforts by the residents to put out the fire were futile as there was no enough water with the Laikipia County Fire engine said to have arrived late and without sufficient water.
Neighbours took issue with services offered by the fire department noting that even after responding to distress calls, they had to strategize for minutes before commencing efforts to put off the fire and subsequently running out of water.
According to Isaac Odour, the county government should make sure that they have enough fire engines to cater for such emergencies adding that the lives of the two children could have been saved if proper structures to respond to emergencies were in place.
Joyce Wangui urged leaders to come out and assist the families who were affected by the fire since nothing was rescued from their houses and they need to restart their lives. Wangui said that most parents are casual laborers and they will need somewhere to live before they regain their footing.
