UAP Old Mutual General Business and Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital have partnered to introduce the first ever comprehensive medical cover exclusively for children.
From the product, children from birth to 18 years old of age, can access the medical insurance cover without necessarily having to be under their parent’s or guardian’s covers.
Unlike the existing children’s medical covers that only caters for inpatient benefits, the latest offering has been expanded to include an outpatient benefit, an inpatient benefit and access to Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital and its satellite clinics.
It also comes with comprehensive cover including both preventing and curative care in addition to inpatient and outpatient care as well as surgical and specialist care.
The product gives parents various options to choose from based on their needs and family sizes with cover limits ranging from Sh 50, 000 to Sh 200,000 for outpatient and up to Sh 5 million for inpatient.
Dr. Robert Nyarango, CEO Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital said the product aims to increase the number of children who can access healthcare through insurance since it allows users to buy at the retail level which means you can access it without being linked to any employer.
In a market that has an estimated two million insurance covers, half of them (one million), are children covers, Nyarango lamented that millions of other children are not medically insured.
“The biggest challenge we have in the provision of healthcare in Kenya and in Africa is lack of healthcare financing with most patients paying for services out of pocket. It is partnerships such as this with UAP Old Mutual that enable us to continue to provide comprehensive care to children in various aspects such as general pediatric consultation, Specialist Clinics, surgical services, inpatient services as well as outpatient facilities including pharmacy, radiology and laboratory services across our network,” he said.
Japheth Ogalo – General Manager Health Business UAP Old Mutual, insisted on the need to improve the health of children which is paramount to each parent or guardian.
He said they have been receiving a lot of feedback from their customers and intermediaries about improving the solution.
“The product addresses the growth and monitoring of children right from the birth to when they reach 18 years of age,” said Ogalo.
In addition, the UAP Old Mutual Foundation in partnership with Old Mutual Limited is supporting the Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation in two critical areas; Provision of protective equipment for healthcare workers and testing of COVID-19 in children.
The initiative aims to support prevention, screening and testing of COVID-19 for children in underprivileged communities in Nairobi and to provide personal protective equipment for frontline healthcare workers in partner hospitals.
So far, close to 200 children have been tested for COVID-19 with the necessary support advanced to those affected.
