UDA protests alleged meddling in electoral process by state officers

Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance is protesting the alleged involvement of state officers in the country’s electoral processes ahead of the August 9 2022 general elections.

In a letter to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission on Tuesday, UDA Secretary-General Veronica Maina particularly complained about remarks attributed to Information, Communication, and Technology Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru at a political rally graced by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga.

“While attending a public campaign meeting for the Presidential candidate for the Azimio coalition, he (Mucheru) is quoted saying that they would ensure that the elections are free and fair, by making sure that systems are working,” Ms. Maina charged

“These remarks… coming at a time when it is less than three months to elections are certainly worrying as they imply that the Cabinet Secretary for ICT has assumed the role of the IEBC in guaranteeing free and fair elections contrary to Articles 81,826 and 88 of the Constitution,” added Maina

In the letter to IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati and copied to the representatives of the United States and United Kingdom governments in Nairobi, DP Ruto’s party wants to know from the electoral agency the exact role of the ICT CS in the electoral process, if any.

While noting that nothing stops the Cabinet Secretary from supporting a Presidential candidate of his choice in the August polls, the party insists that Mucheru should step down from his position in order to do this.

“Section 15 of the election offenses act 2016 also provides that a public officer who engages in activities of any political party or candidate….commits an offense and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding one million shillings or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or both,” Maina said in the protest letter
