Unease in Sonko camp with Supreme Court set to rule on his impeachment

The Supreme Court will Friday deliver its judgment in an impeachment case filed by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

Sonko filed the appeal at the apex court after both Court of Appeal and the High Court upheld his removal from office by the Senate.

In a notice late Thursday, Supreme Court registrar Letizia Wachira noted that the judges will Friday render their judgment at 4 pm by way of an email.

The Supreme Court heard the appeal Thursday where parties argued their cases with Sonko reiterating his impeachment did not meet the threshold set under the Constitution.

The court heard the appeal on a day, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) cleared him to run for Mombasa Governor’s seat in the August 9 elections.

The clearance also followed the decision by a three-judge bench to direct IEBC to clear him after overturning its earlier decision not to clear him.

The news is discomforting to Sonko given that should the apex court uphold the decision of the lower courts, he may be withdrawn from the race he has just been cleared to contest, for the reason that a confirmed impeachment means he is unsuitable to hold public office.
