United knocked out of Champions League by Sevilla

Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage after an awful performance ended in a 2-1 home defeat by Sevilla.

Substitute Wissam Ben Yedder was the match-winner for the Spanish side, shooting from inside the area just two minutes after coming on and heading in at the back post from a corner.

After posing little threat in the goalless first leg, United again looked second best against the La Liga side, though Marouane Fellaini’s thumping effort did draw Sergio Rico into a save and the away goalkeeper kept out Jesse Lingard’s low strike.

Romelu Lukaku lashed home from close range with seven minutes remaining, but it proved to be merely a consolation.

United exit the competition along with Tottenham, but Premier League leaders Manchester City and Liverpool progressed to Friday’s quarter-final draw. Chelsea can join them if they beat Barcelona on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Edin Dzeko’s strike ensured Roma reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2008 with victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.

The former Manchester City forward latched on to Kevin Strootman’s through ball before poking the ball between Andriy Pyatov’s legs for the only goal.

The Italians, who lost the first leg 2-1, went through on away goals.

Ukrainians Shakhtar had Ivan Ordets sent off after he pulled Dzeko down by the shirt.

Finally, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte  has said that Chelsea will “have to suffer” in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie against Barcelona.

Lionel Messi’s equaliser cancelled out Willian’s opener in the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

“For the manager, for every coach, it is not simple to sleep a lot, especially before these types of games,” said Conte.

Chelsea will hope to take inspiration from their 2-2 semi-final draw at the Nou Camp in 2012, giving them a 3-2 victory on aggregate.

That year, under Roberto di Matteo, Chelsea went on to win the trophy, beating Bayern Munich on penalties in the final.
