Woman killed in Machakos stadium stampede

By Wesley Ruto

One woman lost her life and several other people sustained injuries during a stampede when they attempted to forcefully enter Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos town, the venue of this year’s Mashujaa Day national celebrations.

Stephen Mutua told KBC that his wife Mary Kavata, was allegedly electrocuted after touching a live wire at the main entrance.

Mutua, who hails from Mwala said his spouse was pronounced dead on arrival to the Machakos Level 5 Referral Hospital where majority of those injured are being treated.

Trouble started when thousands of citizens who had been locked out of the venue due to the limited space inside the stadium attempted to force their way in shortly after the arrival of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The crowd was protesting against brutality of the National Youth Service officers. One journalist who was filming the fracas was beaten up and ordered to shut his camera.
