The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has successfully moved five elephants away from Lukenya University following safety concerns raised by students and staff.
The joint air and ground operation by KWS, Tsavo Trust, Kamungi Rangers, and the Lukenya University team was launched after the university reported that five elephants had strayed into the surrounding community.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Tsavo Trust said it received an urgent call early in the morning regarding the elephants.
“In a seamless joint operation, our ground teams, supported by KWS, deployed immediately while our helicopter took to the skies. Thanks to the quick coordination between air and ground teams, all five elephants were successfully and safely moved out of the community and back to safety,” the organisation said.
KWS hailed the partnership, noting that the coordinated effort ensured the safety of students and staff while safeguarding the elephants.
It reiterated its commitment to mitigating human-wildlife conflict through collaboration with conservation partners.
“The coordinated operation ensured the safety of students and staff, highlighting the power of partnerships in safeguarding both people and wildlife”, KWS said.
