Students at Maseno University staged protests following the brutal killing of one of their colleagues.

Brian Kakai, a third-year student, went missing last week, only to be found murdered.

The Students’ Association has given the university administration and the police 24 hours to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators, as well as to outline steps to restore security both within and around the institution.

“This heartless act is a clear violation of our right to life and security, which can not be treated lightly.
We hereby condemn this murder in the strongest terms possible and demand immediate action and answers from the Maseno Police station. Insecurity around Maseno has persisted for far too long, and this tragedy is the last straw”, SOMU Secretary General Paul Samwel said in a statement.

The university has been rocked by at least four deaths in the past three weeks.

“Should these demands go unmet, the student body will be left with no choice but to take firm collective action in pursuit of justice..We will not allow our comrades to die in vain. The time for empty promises on matters of security is over”, he warned.

Two students are suspected to have committed suicide, one is believed to have been murdered, and another died under unclear circumstances.
