Team Kenya for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo will hit a residential training camp on the 3rd of next month in preparation for the global event set for September 13th to 21st in Japan.

National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) 1st Vice President Barnaba Korir, said all middle- and long-distance athletes will camp at the Kipchoge Keino Kazi Mingi Farm in Eldoret, while sprinters will pitch camp in Nairobi.

“All the athletes will report to camp on the 3rd, with the middle- and long-distance athletes camping at the Kipchoge Keino Kazi Mingi Farm, while the sprinters will remain in Nairobi,” said Korir.

According to Korir, they are negotiating with the government to allow sprinters to travel to Miramas, Marseille, France, for a residential training camp.

“We are in discussion with the government; if funds will be available, we will send the sprinters to Miramas; if not, we will have a plan B.” Korir stated

He added that the number of athletes for Tokyo is likely to increase from the current 58, as more athletes are within the set qualification standards ahead of the August 24th deadline for track and field events.

“We have two more athletes who are expected to qualify in the men’s 5000m by the deadline, so the team will grow.” Since there is only one qualifying athlete, the two athletes who have met the time will be added to the squad if no one qualifies before the deadline.” Korir explained.

Kenya is aiming to better its 2023 results in Budapest, Hungary, where it finished 4th on the medal table with 3 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals.
