Athletics Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to ensure the delayed election is conducted once the feedback from the stakeholders which was collected during the constitutional review exercise is adopted by the National Executive Committee.
In an interview with KBC, AK Executive member Barnaba Korir said once the report is tabled, the NEC will adopt and announce the new roadmap to elections, denying claims of clinging to office without elections for over 8 years.
“We are just waiting for the report on the constitutional review process to be tabled before the National Executive Committee, after which it will inform on the roadmap for elections. We want elections as soon as possible.” Korir stated
AK has, however, refuted claims of sabotaging the electoral process in order to cling to office for the longest time.
“I want to make it clear it’s not that we don’t want elections; we are ready even tomorrow. Those who will win will continue. Even if I lose, I have other things I can do, but the due process must be followed. We also urge all those who have been going to court to do so this time but instead be ready to vie for positions once the date is announced.” He added
AK hasn’t held its elections for the past two terms owing to dragging court cases filed by the aggrieved parties.
The current AK president, Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei, has been at the helm of the federation since 2015.
