Nairobi, Kenya – The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, has reaffirmed Beijing’s strong opposition to the Taiwan independence movement, emphasizing the need for greater support from overseas Chinese communities to promote China’s peaceful reunification.

Speaking at the inaugural Conference of Overseas Chinese in East Africa for the Promotion of the Peaceful Reunification of China, held in Nairobi on Tuesday, the envoy stressed the significance of national unity as a fundamental pillar of China’s long-term stability and prosperity.

The diplomat instead underscored the necessity of maintaining national unity.

“We call upon Chinese communities abroad to continue building bridges of communication, strengthening unity, and contributing to the great cause of national rejuvenation and reunification,” Ambassador Guo stated.

Her comments followed the recent rejection by member states of the World Health Organization of a proposal to invite Taiwan to its annual assembly in Geneva, amid strong opposition from China.

“The proposal openly challenges the authority of the U.N. and the post-war international order,” stated Chinese Ambassador Chen Xu, who was part of a delegation of over 200 Chinese representatives at the meeting.

In a statement released prior to the meeting, the Chinese Foreign Ministry reiterated that China’s position on Taiwan’s participation in activities of international organizations, including the WHO, is consistent and clear: such matters should be addressed in accordance with the one-China principle, as established by UNGA Resolution 2758 and WHA Resolution 25.1.

“China’s Taiwan region, unless given approval by the Central Government, has no basis, reason, or right to participate in the WHA,” it stated.

The ministry emphasized that challenging UNGA Resolution 2758 equates to challenging the one-China principle, which undermines not only China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity but also international justice and the prevailing consensus, as well as the post-war international order.

The landmark event in Nairobi also featured remarks from other Chinese community leaders, including Mr. Gao Wei, Chairman of the Kenya Overseas Chinese Association, who reaffirmed their commitment to “fostering deeper cooperation, leveraging the strength of the overseas Chinese community, and providing steadfast support to the peaceful reunification efforts of the Chinese nation.”

The conference attracted over 300 participants, including prominent Chinese representatives from various professional sectors and communities across the East African region.

A key highlight of the event was the unveiling of the “Nairobi Declaration of the 2025 East African Conference on the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China.”

The organizers stated that the declaration reflects a shared vision among overseas Chinese communities in East Africa to promote harmony, unity, and national pride.
