Emmanuel Wanyonyi held off stiff competition to claim his first gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, on Saturday evening.
The Olympic champion dipped first across the finish line in 1:41.86 for gold, ahead of Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati, who took silver in 1:41.90, while defending champion Marco Arop from Canada finished in 1:41.95 for bronze.
It was Kenya’s 1st gold medal at the global championship in the race since Emmanuel Korir in 2022 in Oregon, USA.
