The HSBC 7’s division 2, set to be held in Kenya for the 1st time between the 14th and 15th of next month, received a major boost of KSh 2m from Crown Paints to go towards the organisation of the tournament.
Speaking during the event today, Rugby Kenya Union chairperson Harriet Okatch said the tournament presents a big opportunity for Kenyan players to showcase their talent in front of home fans.
“We are excited. I mean, after South Africa, it’s Kenya hosting HSBC. It’s the first time it’s been a first, or six months. It’s been a first for Kenya Rugby in a lot of things, so this is going to enable us to showcase what more we can do as Kenya Rugby and as Kenya out there.” Okatch said
Speaking during the unveiling of the sponsorship, Richard Muturi, Chief Operating Officer, Crown Paints PLC, said they are working towards a long-term partnership with KRU.
“Rugby in Kenya is just growing huge year on year and we know from our customer base and through our strategic planning, we can see a lot of our people connecting with the game so we have to connect and that’s really the most important thing for us is where we make our connections and how we make our connections. So the reason behind supporting rugby is really more strategic. It’s long term; it’s not short. “stated Muturi
The two-day tournament will be staged at the Nyayo stadium, featuring 12 teams, six for men and six for women.
Shujaa will be competing in the tournament after being relegated from the HSBC Sevens last year.
