Council of Governors Chair Ahmed Abdullahi has condemned senators over the alleged assault on Samburu Governor Lati Lelelit at Parliament terming it an act of hooliganism.

Speaking to the media, Abdullahi said the incident occurred when some senators were seen attempting to forcefully drag the governor to appear before the Senate County Public Accounts Committee to respond to audit queries.

He termed the incident as harassment, assault and intimidation, calling for respect for due process and proper engagement between Governors and the Senate.

“The Council of Governors firmly condemns the shocking and unacceptable assault on Lelelit Lati, Governor of Samburu County, by members of the Senate. This act of hooliganism not only demeans the dignity of the Office of the Governor as a Head of County Government, but also strikes at the very heart of constitutionalism, institutional decorum, and the rule of law,” CoG Chair noted.

CoG says such violence is a blatant violation of the rights and protections guaranteed under the Constitution of Kenya, which upholds human dignity, respect, and the peaceful conduct of public affairs as non-negotiable national values.

Abdullulahi further urged relevant authorities to investigate the matter, as they seek legal redress to matter. “COG therefore call for immediate action to ensure justice is served, institutional integrity is protected, and public confidence in our democratic processes is upheld.”

Even as the standoff between Governor and the Senate over oversight and audit issues escalates Abdullahi says the Council remains committed to cooperating with oversight institutions, but insists that engagements must be conducted lawfully and with respect for the rule of law.

The Council reminded all State actors that leadership must at all times be guided by accountability, restraint, and fidelity to human rights and constitutional order.
