Residents of Archer’s Post in Waso Ward, Samburu County, took to the streets on Friday to stage protests in support of Governor Lati Lelelit.

The demonstrators expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which Senators handled the governor during a recent Senate session, terming the conduct disrespectful and demeaning to Samburu’s leadership.

In a statement, the residents raised concern over what they described as a lack of decorum in Senate proceedings.

They noted that the Senate, established under the Constitution of Kenya (2010), is mandated to uphold integrity, fairness and dignity in its engagement with elected leaders.

“The Senate is a respected institution, and its members must conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values and principles outlined in the Constitution,” the statement read in part.

“We call upon the leadership of the Senate, Senator Edwin Sifuna, and all concerned senators to treat Governor Lati Lelelit with the respect he deserves as the duly elected leader of Samburu County.”

Protesters marched through Archer’s Post town carrying placards and chanting slogans in defence of the governor.

They maintained that the Senate’s oversight role should not translate into personal attacks or public humiliation of county leaders.

The residents also faulted Samburu Senator Steve Lelegwe, urging him to take a more proactive role in defending the county’s interests at the national level.

“It was not just an attack on the governor, but on the entire community,” one resident said. “We expect leaders at the national level to exercise restraint and uphold mutual respect.”

Governor Lelelot had been summoned by the Senate to answer audit queries on the use of county funds.

The governor had allegedly failed to honour several summons by the Senate’s County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC).
