The National Liberal Party (NLP) is set to make a defining political decision on Thursday when delegates converge at Kitui Stadium for a summit expected to determine the party’s alliances and electoral strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Dubbed “A Time to Decide,” the summit comes months after the party publicly declared support for Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and sought political engagement with him—an overture NLP officials now say has gone unanswered.
The perceived silence from the Wiper leader has left the party at a crossroads, forcing it to reassess its place in an increasingly fluid political landscape.
At the heart of Thursday’s meeting will be three possible paths: maintaining its support for Wiper while awaiting a response from Kalonzo; pursuing an alliance with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement; or opening the door to cooperation with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.
“We cannot remain in political limbo indefinitely,” a senior NLP official said ahead of the summit. “We reached out to Wiper without success.
We have also initiated engagement with Linda Mwananchi. It is now up to our delegates to determine the party’s direction.”
The deliberations are expected to be closely watched, particularly in Ukambani, where Wiper has long maintained political dominance and where support for President Ruto’s administration remains limited.
Political observers say any decision by NLP to align itself with Kenya Kwanza would represent a significant departure from prevailing political sentiment in the region and could fundamentally alter the county’s political landscape.
Conversely, an alliance with Linda Mwananchi would position the party within the broader opposition while allowing it to maintain a degree of political independence from Wiper.
Beyond coalition politics, delegates are also expected to deliberate on the party’s electoral strategy in Kitui County, including identifying candidates for key elective positions in the 2027 polls.
Although party leader Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli will host the summit, officials maintain that delegates will have the final say on the party’s political direction.
The meeting is also expected to fuel speculation over Muli’s own political future, with growing expectations that he could use the occasion to declare whether he will contest the Kitui governorship or seek the Kitui Central parliamentary seat.
Political analysts argue that Thursday’s resolutions could prove to be one of the most consequential political decisions in Kitui ahead of the 2027 elections, testing whether smaller parties can forge an independent political path or ultimately align themselves with one of the country’s major political formations.
For now, attention is firmly fixed on Kitui Stadium, where one question hangs over the summit: Will NLP remain in Kalonzo’s corner, chart an independent opposition course with Linda Mwananchi, or make the unexpected leap into Kenya Kwanza?
