Interior and National Administration CS Kipchumba Murkomen has urged Kenyans to shun political rallies where goons are involved, warning that politicians who sponsor and facilitate violence should be held accountable.
Murkomen said Kenyans should avoid attending meetings where political leaders hire or facilitate goons, as security agencies step up efforts to prevent violence at political gatherings.
“I want to advise the people of Kenya not to go to the meetings of leaders who are paying and walking around with goons,” he said.
The CS said the police had adopted an intelligence-led strategy that allows security agencies to identify and arrest suspected troublemakers before they reach political rallies.
“I want to commend the Inspector General of Police because he now has a new strategy to arrest and detain goons even before they get to meetings to cause violence,” Murkomen said.
He reassured Kenyans that the country remains safe and that citizens are free to assemble peacefully, while urging political leaders to cooperate with security agencies and comply with security advisories and protocols.
Murkomen spoke while presiding over the third edition of the Belgut Marathon at Kabianga High School in Kericho County. The annual charity competition is organised by Belgut MP Nelson Koech.
The CS also called on residents to join efforts to combat drug and substance abuse and urged those without national identification cards to apply for them to enable them to vote and access government services.
