The Kenya Industry and Entrepreneurship project (KIEP) an initiative launched in 2020—officially marked its closure at a high-profile event held at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies.

The ceremony emphasised the project’s success in reviving Kenya’s SMEs by providing over 250 small and medium-sized businesses with tools for innovation, increased efficiency, and market development.

Speaking on behalf of Dr. Juma Mukhwana, CBS, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry, Roy Nyangena, Acting Head of Research, Manufacturing, and Industrialisation Policy at the State Department for Industry, embraced the event.

“KIEP 250+ is not just a project—it is a reflection of what can be achieved when vision, support, and strategy align,” said Nyangena

The World Bank funded KIEP 250+, which was administered by the ministry in partnership with NIRAS and Intellecap, with the goal of improving the operational capacities of SMEs through performance-based finance and technical support.

It enlisted three cohorts of businesses between 2020 and 2023, with the goal of accelerating growth despite the worldwide economic slump induced by the epidemic.

The figures tell a compelling story: 142 SMEs signed contracts worth more than Ksh 800 million, with 112 successfully fulfilling their development goals and obtaining reimbursements totalling more than Ksh 500 million.

Government programs such as county aggregation and industrial parks, agro-processing centres, and industrial research funding are projected to build on the momentum established by KIEP 250+, solidifying Kenya’s path to become a globally competitive industrial economy.

The end of KIEP 250+ is more than just the end of a project; it marks the beginning of a new chapter in Kenya’s entrepreneurial spirit.

The lesson to the SMEs who emerged stronger is clear: resilience, when combined with the correct support, can drive long-term industrial success.
