Beijing has vehemently condemned the new sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom against Chinese entities accused of supplying drone components and other military-related goods to Russia amid the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking during a daily press briefing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that Beijing had lodged “serious protests” with the UK government and expressed “strong dissatisfaction” regarding the sanctions.
The UK government announced the measures on Tuesday, targeting individuals and entities from several countries, including two China-based firms, over allegations related to Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.
“China opposes unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law or the authorization of the UN Security Council,” Lin said. “China strongly deplores the UK’s move and has lodged serious protests with the UK side,” he added in response to the measures.
Lin defended China’s position on the Ukraine crisis, asserting that Beijing has consistently promoted peace negotiations while maintaining strict controls on the export of dual-use items that could have military applications.
“China has been committed to promoting talks for peace and has strictly controlled the export of dual-use items,” he stated.
The spokesperson further stressed that normal economic and trade exchanges between China and Russia should not be disrupted by external pressure.
“China will do what is necessary to firmly protect its legitimate and lawful rights and interests,” he stated
