An autopsy of a fisherman who died at Kipasi Police Post in Homa Bay County has revealed that he died of strangulation.

The County Medical Services Chief Officer Kevin Osuri said that the postmortem report conducted at the County Referral Hospital revealed that the deceased identified as Calvins Omondi Onditi died due to asphyxiation.

The suspect died while being detained by police and was found with a pair of trouser tied on his neck.

Osuri said it was now the work of investigative officers to establish how the trousers ended on the neck.

The family of the deceased said they didn’t agree with the result of the autopsy and called for thorough investigations into the incident.

Ms Millicent Akoth, the mother of the deceased said her son was dressed in a pair of shorts when he was arrested.

“Police should explain how my son ended up having trousers on his neck. Where did the pair of trousers come from when he left home with shorts?” Ms Akoth questioned.

Family lawyer Albert Ongoso said the man was drunk when he was arrested.

He noted that in his drunken stupor, the suspect could not have climbed to the roof to tie a knot and hang himself.

“We also want to know why the body had to be taken to the mortuary without the family being present,” Mr Ongoso said.

Other family members said the government should take the responsibility of taking care of the funeral expenses of the deceased.

Mr Achieng Achieng, a relative, said the man died in the hands of the police therefore, “the government should ensure he is accorded a decent send off,” he said.
