Kenya pushes for sustainable aviation at ICAO assembly

Kenya is backing adoption of sustainable practices in the aviation sector to drive Africa’s social and economic development.

At the ongoing 42nd International Civil Aviation Organizations (ICAO) in Montreal Canada, Kenya co-authored and sponsored key working papers focusing on climate change, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation(CORSIA) implementation, Safety, Security.

“Kenya’s contributions positioned it as a strong advocate for sustainable aviation in Africa, pushing for global financing, technology transfer, and capacity building. Its interventions framed aviation decarbonization not only as a climate obligation but also as a driver of economic and social development, ensuring that no developing country is left behind,” said Nicholas Bodo, Director, Air Transport at the Ministry of Roads and Transport.

Through African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) and the Coalition led by UK through IACAC, Bodo said Kenya contributed to a Working paper on the Long-Term Aspirational Goal (LTAG), stronger commitments to Sustainable Aviation Full (SAF) and Low-Carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF).

According to Bodo, Kenya is leading the region in capacity building and feasibility studies to support SAF deployment.

Additional the country has also participated in presentation of position working papers that supported on environment, ICAO budget, gender, legal, aviation security and , aviation safety, and economic development of air transport.

“The different interventions underscored Kenya’s progressive approach to ensuring sustainable aviation growth, strengthening resilience, and positioning itself as both a regional and global leader in the aviation sector” added Bodo.

Kenya also held discussions with the United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in a bid to support the country in strengthening the Outbound Screening Standards (OSS) at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), reflecting Kenya’s commitment to global aviation security compliance and standards.

“By aligning with global standards and building meaningful partnerships, Kenya is determined to contribute to an aviation sector that connects people, promotes economic growth, and safeguards the wellbeing of all nations,” noted  Carolyne Kamende Daudi, Kenya’s High Commissioner to Canada.

The Assembly approved the ICAO budget to support the Organization’s long-term strategic goals, and new ICAO Council members were elected during the sessions.
