Five Kenyan university students have returned home after a transformative week in China as part of Huawei’s global flagship program, Seeds for the Future 2025.

The program, held from 21st to 25th July 2025, brought together top talent from around the world to explore the frontiers of emerging technologies while fostering cross-cultural understanding.

Representing Kenya were: Shem Machii Ngunjiri from Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), Sophy Cherono Rop from United States International University–Africa (USIU-A) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology’s (JKUAT) Huldah Mwihaki Kaura.

Others were Mungai Erick Gachuhi from Moi University and Samuel Ochor Ogeno from the University of Nairobi.

The students joined peers from countries including Brazil, Namibia, Portugal, Côte d’Ivoire, and Madagascar in a dynamic learning experience that combined high-level ICT training, innovation showcases, and cultural exchange.

Participants explored cutting-edge advancements in 5G, AI, Cloud Computing, and Smart City solutions through site visits to Huawei’s Exhibition Halls, the Smart Government Showcase in Longgang, and global drone manufacturer DJI’s headquarters.

During the program’s closing ceremony, the Kenyan students were awarded certificates of completion in recognition of their commitment and participation.

Reflecting on the experience, Samuel Ochor shared a powerful metaphor during his speech: “A seed starts in the dark, buried in the soil—unseen, uncertain, unimportant, but full of potential. With time, care, water, air, and the right environment, it sprouts, grows, and eventually becomes something impactful. Thank you, Huawei ‘Seeds for the Future,’ for providing the fertile ground for our minds to flourish.”

This sentiment was echoed by fellow participant Huldah Mwihaki Kaura, who added: “The opportunity to interact with global experts and fellow students from across the world expanded our minds and deepened our appreciation of how innovation can drive real change. The blend of learning and cultural exploration made this an unforgettable journey.”

The Seeds for the Future 2025 program offers participants a rich and immersive experience, blending advanced technological training with cultural exploration and global networking.

One of the key highlights is the Advanced ICT Training, where students engage in hands-on sessions covering emerging technologies such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, and Digital Power. These sessions are designed to provide practical skills and deep insights into the technologies shaping the future.

Participants also gain exclusive behind-the-scenes access to some of Huawei’s most innovative spaces. This includes guided tours of the company’s Research & Development centers, technology exhibition halls, and a visit to the renowned DJI factory, offering firsthand exposure to cutting-edge innovation in action.

The program fosters global networking opportunities through participation in high-level forums and discussions, such as the roundtable on Opportunities for Entrepreneurship and Careers in Artificial Intelligence. These engagements allow students to connect with industry leaders, experts, and peers from around the world, expanding their professional horizons.

In addition to the technical and professional aspects, the program emphasizes cultural exchange. Participants experience an immersive journey that blends China’s rich traditions with its modern technological advancements, fostering greater cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.

Michael Kamau, Huawei ICT Academy Manager, commented:

“It’s a privilege to support this transformative learning journey. These bright minds represent the future of Kenya’s digital landscape, and through programs like Seeds for the Future, we’re proud to equip them with the skills, global exposure, and networks they need to lead Africa’s tech-driven growth.”

Huawei’s Seeds for the Future program underscores the company’s commitment to bridging the digital divide through youth empowerment and knowledge sharing. Since 2014, Kenya has been a key participant, with dozens of alumni contributing to national and continental digital growth.
