Kenyan double Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge will open his
season on Sunday, 31st August, competing in the Sydney Marathon, the first
stop of the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
The 25th edition of the race also marks a milestone, being included in
the World Marathon Majors series races for the 1st time.
The 40-year-old, who brags with a fastest time of 2:01:09, will face fellow
countrymen Vincent Ngetich the 3rd fastest at 2:03:13 and Ethiopia’s
Birhanu Legese is the 2nd-fastest ranked athlete over 42 km.
Former world record holder Brigid Kosgei will face off with Olympic
champion Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands and 3 other Kenyans, Pascalia
Chepkosgei, Evaline Chirchir and Gladys Chesir in the women’s battle.
More than 4,000 of Sunday’s runners will be looking for a seventh
“star” to add to those they have earned by completing the other six
races in the World Marathon Majors series.
The Sydney field is 10,000 up on last year but still smaller than some.
