Defending champion Faith Kipyegon, Nelly Chepchirchir and Dorcas Ewoi sailed through to the 1500 m final on day 2 of the World Athletics Championships at the Tokyo National Stadium in Japan on Sunday afternoon.
Running in heat 1 Kipyegon, who is chasing her 4th title over the distance, crossed the finish line in 4:00.34, ahead of debutant Ewoi, who settled for 2nd position, clocking 4:00.65.
Diamond League Champion Chepchirchir also emerged victorious in her heat in 4:06.86 to book her slot in next Tuesday’s final, while Olympian Susan Ejore missed out after finishing 7th.
In the 100m, the Commonwealth Champion’s dream of a 2nd successive final appearance was shattered after placing 5th in the semi-final with 10.09.
Mercy Oketch qualified for the 400m semi-final on her 1st appearance at the championships, finishing 3rd in heat 3 in 50.76 seconds.
