Kenya Rugby Union President Alexander Sasha Mutai, has finally bowed to pressure and resigned from his position ahead of the no-confidence motion lined up against him.

Mutai tendered his resignation on Friday during a heated and tense Special General Meeting (SGM) at the RFUEA Grounds.

“Maybe I am not a good politician ..maybe I don’t know how to cajole. Having read the room…and looking up to my role model Mwangi Muthee…I hereby tender my resignation as chair.”  said Mutai.

Mutai is at the centre of allegations for misappropriation of Ksh 13.2 million through illegal payments to non existent service providers.

The motion had been introduced by Secretary General Ray Olendo.

During the meeting, Mutai denied the allegations and accused Olendo of tarnishing  his name  through  false accusations.

Mutai survived a first ouster from office attempt  after the Sports and Dispute Tribunal nullified his suspension by the KRU board in April this year.

Mutai was elected unopposed as President  during the KRU’s elections at the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 29 March 2023 at the RFUEA Ground in Nairobi.

His resignation comes barely three weeks before the National Olympic Committee of Kenya elections set for the 19th of June, in which he was vying for the committee member position.
