As Kenyans prepare to take advantage of free entry to Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS)-managed national parks, reserves, and sanctuaries on Saturday, September 27, KWS has issued an important update: Lake Nakuru National Park will not be part of the free entry initiative.

In a statement released on Friday, September 26, KWS clarified that while all other national parks, reserves, and sanctuaries will remain open and accessible under the World Tourism Day celebration, Lake Nakuru National Park is excluded.

However, visitors with prepaid eCitizen tickets will still be able to access the park via the Nderit Gate between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm on Saturday.

The statement further noted that the Lake Nakuru Main Gate (Flamingo area) and the Lanet Gate will remain closed for the day.

This update comes just days after the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, under the leadership of Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, announced that Kenyans would enjoy free entry into KWS-managed parks as part of the 2025 World Tourism Day celebrations.

This year’s theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” underscores the role of tourism in conservation, cultural appreciation, and economic growth.

However, KWS was quick to emphasise that all other parks across the country remain open under the free entry program and encouraged Kenyans to take the opportunity to explore and reconnect with the country’s diverse wildlife heritage.
