Nairobi United FC’s ambition of advancing to the knockout stage in their inaugural CAF Confederation Cup were shattered on Sunday evening after suffering a 2-1, defeat against Tanzanian side Azam United FC in a group B match staged at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

Duncan Odhiambo gave the hosts an early lead in the 13th minute, but the visitors quickly responded, equalizing three minutes later through Japheth Kitambala.

A costly mistake by Nairobi’s goalkeeper, Ernest Mohammed, resulted in an own goal 12 minutes before the final whistle, securing Azam’s first victory.

The defeat, their third in succession, leaves Nairobi at the rock bottom of the group with no points and only one goal scored and having conceded six from three matches.

Populary known as Naiboi FC, will travel to face Azam in the return leg this Sunday, February 1st, in round four.

A week later, they will host Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in Nairobi before wrapping up their group stage matches against AS Maniema in DR Congo on the 15th of next month.

Wydad leads the group with 9 points, followed by Maniema with 6, while Azam holds third place with 3 points.
