Completion of the Kirigiti stadium in Kiambu is expected before September this year after the government settled the remaining dues for the completion of the football ground whose construction had stalled for more than 12 months.
It had also been closed but was reopened on Thursday following a visit by the Cabinet Secretary for Sports Salim Mvurya, accompanied by PS for Sports Peter Tum and Kiambu governor Kimani Wamatangi, who resolved the outstanding issues that had forced the closure of the stadium.
‘’The last one week and a half we already paid the contractor part of the money and next week we will pay the final account. What we have agreed today the Sports Kenya and County Govt.will again access we need to do the field to FIFA standards and the works could begin next week with a team set to visit the ground’’Mvurya said.
The Cs added: ‘’ This is work that should not go to waste .we have agreed to unclock everything and there’s going to be a lot of activities since this is a training ground for CHAN matches and this is a very important project for Kenya and Kiambu County in particular’’.
The inspection follows the tour of Raila Odinga stadium in Homabay last week as the government continues to upgrade sporting facilities in the country in an effort to provide sporting talents with facilities capable of growing their talents.
‘’When this stadium is opened ,the Kiambu economy will also be unlocked. The guests who will be coming to play here will be uncountable and the businesses and players in this are will benefit as well.As county govt. We are going to build the Amphitheatre here’’, Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wa Matangi said.
Seats are yet to be installed at Kirigiti whose playing surface is yet to be laid.
