President William Ruto has reaffirmed his oath to uphold, protect, and defend the Constitution as the country marked the inaugural Katiba Day at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Nairobi.

Speaking during the event, President Ruto called upon all arms of government and citizens to secure justice, deepen democracy, and build a prosperous, enduring Kenya for all.

“As President, I reaffirm my oath to uphold, protect, and defend the Constitution. I call upon every arm of government, and every citizen, to do the same. Together, let us secure justice, deepen democracy, and build a prosperous, enduring Kenya for all.”

The day, set aside on August 27 each year through a proclamation made by the President on Monday, will serve as a moment of solemn reflection, celebration of progress, and renewal of national commitment to the 2010 Constitution, which was promulgated 15 years ago.

According to the directive, Katiba Day will be observed annually on 27th August both in Kenya and at diplomatic missions abroad.

“Katiba Day shall be observed throughout the territory of Kenya and all our diplomatic missions abroad as a day dedicated to renewing our shared commitment to the ideals of our Constitution by fostering national dialogue on constitutionalism, governance, and the rule of law” The President declared.

The President noted that the day will serve as an occasion for national dialogue on constitutionalism, governance, and the rule of law.

In his address, Ruto described the Constitution as a covenant born of painful lessons and the struggles of generations, adding that it stands as the “solemn vow of Never Again” and a guiding light for building a just, inclusive, and democratic Kenya.

“Born of painful lessons and the struggles of generations, the Constitution stands as our solemn vow of Never Again; a covenant to build a just, inclusive, and democratic nation where dignity, unity, and equity are the guiding lights.” He noted.

The President noted that for 15 years, the Constitution has delivered devolution, safeguarded fundamental rights, advanced education, healthcare, and housing, and strengthened the institutions that protect justice and democracy.

Further he said the gains made must be guarded against the corrosive threats of corruption and disregard for the rule of law.

“For 15 years, this transformative charter has delivered devolution, safeguarded fundamental rights, advanced education, healthcare, and housing, and strengthened the institutions that protect justice and democracy. These hard-won gains must be jealously guarded against the corrosive threats of corruption and disregard for the rule of law.” He added.
