Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos has flagged off Kenyan university students who will take part in this year’s Huawei ICT Global Competition in Shenzhen, China.

The event will take place in Shenzhen, China, from May 20 to May 24, 2025, and will feature 16 participants from Kenya, including 12 exceptional students and 4 lecturers. They will be competing in the Network, Cloud, Computing, and Innovation tracks.

The Cabinet Secretary extended best wishes to the students as they prepare to represent the nation and region on the global stage. The selected students will compete in the four main tracks of the competition: Network, Cloud, Computing, and Innovation.

“This competition has, over the years, been an important platform for nurturing young minds, equipping them with cutting-edge skills and creating opportunities for future innovators in the ICT sector,” stated Migos, who was accompanied by Amb. Jane Makori, Director General of Asia Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.

Huawei Kenya Media & Government Relations Director Khadija Mohamed affirmed the company’s commitment to developing a robust ICT talent ecosystem among university and TVET educators and students globally.

“As part of this commitment, we host the annual Huawei ICT Competition Global Final, now in its 9th edition. This competition has attracted over 160,000 students from more than 2,200 universities and colleges across 74 countries and regions,” she stated.

“In Kenya alone, more than 12,000 university students and over 500 TVET students participated in the national stages of the competition, gaining exposure to cutting-edge technologies such as data communications, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing through Huawei ICT Academies,” explained Khadija.

Steven Zhang, Deputy CEO of Huawei Kenya, noted that the company continues to strengthen the talent ecosystem among universities and TVETs, further supporting the Ministry of Education’s agenda to provide advanced digital skills that enhance learning, research, innovation, and ICT industry-relevant training for Kenyan students.

“The Global ICT Accelerating Education transformation summit will attract government leaders, UNESCO, policy makers and other experts to discuss the digital transformation for education at a global level,” said Zhang.

Over the years, Kenyan students have demonstrated remarkable performance at the global level. In last year’s Global Final held in China, they achieved two First Prize awards and three Third Prize awards.
