Reigning Kenya Basketball Federation Men’s Premier League Champions Nairobi City Thunder have extended their partnership with USA higher education institute Nexford University in an agreement that sees Thunder players further their education through online programmes offered by the university.
The collaboration extended for the second year will help the players guarantee themselves a future after their playing careers.
A communique sent to newsrooms stated:’’Thunder players will enroll in Nexford’s future-focused online degree programs, unlocking opportunities to develop leadership, business, and digital skills while continuing to compete at the top level of African basketball’’.
“Kenya’s athletes are showing the continent what’s possible when education and sport move hand in hand. In the US, many great athletes have struggled after their careers ended without the foundation of education. Africa’s fast-growing sports industry has the chance to build differently – and Nairobi City Thunder is leading the way. Together, we’re shaping a generation that doesn’t just play to win – they learn to lead, innovate, and inspire long after the game.” Remarked Fadl Al Tarzi, CEO, Nexford University
Already the model has enabled Thunder players Albert Odero, Tylor Okari, and Griffin Ligare to balance academics with a demanding training schedule. The result has been a ripple effect of ambition both on and off the court as more players begin to view education as a key part of their professional journey.
“At Nairobi City Thunder, living up to your full potential both on and off the court are equally important. Our partnership with Nexford University and their support has changed how our players think about success,” said Colin Rasmussen, CEO of Nairobi City Thunder. “They’re not just chasing trophies, they’re building legacies. This partnership represents what modern African sports should look like: performance, purpose, and progress.”
As Thunder continues to raise the bar having qualified for the Basketball Africa League Elite 16 and earned continental recognition Nexford stands as a key partner in preparing these athletes for leadership beyond basketball.
