Earlier this year, MultiChoice announced that the group would be discontinuing the streaming service after “continued annual losses.”
In a more recent statement, as seen by KBC Digital, the group announced that Showmax Originals would be moving to DSTV Stream once Showmax closes on April 30.
Unlike other streaming services available in Kenya, Showmax is among the few that consistently funded and hosted Kenyan shows, in partnership with local production studios and MultiChoice, on the platform.
Some of the Kenyan shows hosted on the service included ‘The Real Housewives of Nairobi’, ‘Pepeta’, ‘4Play’, ‘The Chocolate Empire’ and ‘Single Kiasi’, to mention a few.
However, MultiChoice CEO Nzola Miranda has said that “commitment” will not change despite the changes.
“Series like ‘Single Kiasi’, ‘Real Housewives of Nairobi’, ‘Reckless’, and ‘The Mommy Club NBO’, along with productions from across the continent, were created through collaboration between MultiChoice’s content teams and local producers,” said Nzola Miranda. “That commitment to African storytelling does not change.”
To watch all your favourite shows, current Showmax subscribers will need to sign up for DSTV Stream subscription is not transferable. The good news is that select Showmax subscribers will be offered trial access to DSTV Stream until May 30.
“Our priority is to ensure customers continue to have a home for the stories they love,” continued Mr Miranda. “By bringing thousands of hours of Showmax Originals and a deeper on-demand library into DStv Stream, we are creating a more holistic experience where live sport, news, the best international content, and award-winning local drama live together.”
