A police constable charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a protester in London Estate, Nakuru County, on June 9, 2025, has been released on bond.
Justice Julius Nangea ruled that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) had not presented compelling evidence to justify detaining Constable Ephantus Njeru during the trial.
The officer was granted a bond of Ksh1 million, with a surety of the same amount.
The court also noted that four individuals identified as potential key witnesses, who alleged they had received threats, failed to support their claims with affidavits.
Justice Nangea further ruled that, since Constable Njeru had been interdicted pending the murder trial, he would have no access to witnesses, firearms, or details of witnesses involved in the case.
The court also dismissed IPOA’s claim that Njeru’s alleged shooting of Mwangi was premeditated.
Additionally, the court found that Njeru did not pose a flight risk, as no evidence had been provided to suggest otherwise.
Njeru denied the murder charge. He is accused of fatally shooting Mwangi during a protest in the London Estate area of Nakuru County.
