The Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Francis Atwoli has described China as a sincere partner committed to Africa’s development.
Speaking shortly after President William Ruto’s recent state visit to China, Atwoli highlighted the significant benefits that Kenya and the continent could gain from a close collaboration with the world’s second-largest economy.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, President William Ruto. You went to China, and we at COTU work closely with all Chinese federations of trade unions,” he stated.
“Your Excellency, the majority of Chinese people are genuine and support Africa Genuinely,” he added.
Atwoli pointed out that China’s commitment to supporting Kenya is evident through numerous recent agreements across various sectors. He expressed particular optimism about upcoming infrastructure projects backed by the People’s Republic of China, which he described as long overdue.
“I want to thank you for your trip to China. We will achieve many things, particularly the agreement you signed to construct a dual carriageway from Nairobi towards Western Kenya, as well as the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway,” he noted.
“The SGR is one of the most significant projects that will help alleviate transport challenges facing Kenyans,” Atwoli remarked.
China and Africa engage in comprehensive and multifaceted cooperation under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) framework. The initiative focuses on advancing modernization, infrastructure development, trade prosperity, industrial cooperation, digital transformation, healthcare, green development, and people-to-people exchanges.
China has pledged substantial financial support, including a $50 billion package comprising credit lines, assistance, and investments to advance Africa’s development goals.
