The Chinese government on Monday reaffirmed its zero tolerance for misconduct by its citizens operating abroad. Through its embassy in Nairobi, Beijing strongly condemned a video-recorded incident showing a Chinese national assaulting his Kenyan colleague.
In a statement, the Chinese Embassy in Kenya reiterated that all Chinese citizens in the country must strictly adhere to Kenyan laws, regulations, and cultural customs.
“We are extremely disappointed to see such an incident occur,” stated the embassy, rebuking the conduct of the individual involved.
The embassy confirmed that the management of the Chinese company where the incident took place had immediately terminated the worker’s contract and was considering additional disciplinary measures.
“The Embassy consistently requires Chinese citizens in Kenya to strictly abide by local laws, regulations, and cultural customs, and the vast majority of them do so,” the statement to the media read.
However, it was quick to point out that the incident was an isolated case and should not interfere with ongoing diplomatic relations and investment cooperation between Chinese and Kenyan enterprises.
“It is a reminder to all Chinese citizens in Kenya to uphold the principle of mutual respect with Kenyan friends and to behave in accordance with the laws, regulations, and cultural customs of Kenya,” the embassy explained.
