Kenya has unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) skills programme in partnership with Google, targeting students in institutions of higher learning as part of efforts to build a workforce ready for the digital economy.

Speaking at the event launch on Wednesday, ICT & the Digital Economy CS William Kabogo lauded the programme, urging university students to embrace it.

“This initiative by Google is a pivotal step that aligns perfectly with Kenya’s strategic vision, as outlined in the Kenya AI Strategy 2025-2030, to harness the transformative power of AI for sustainable development, economic growth, and the well-being of our citizens. By providing our university and college students with premium access to Google’s most advanced AI model, we are actively investing in equipping the next generation with foundational AI skills needed to thrive in the classroom and prepare for the future workforce of ICT & the Digital Economy.” stated CS Kabogo

Dr. David Watene, Director, University Education and Research, Ministry of Education (who represented the PS for Higher Education & Research, Ministry of Higher Education, Dr Beatrice Inyangala), said, “Our education sector recognises the urgent need to address the skills gap and integrate AI literacy across all learning demographics.

Michael Murungi, a government affairs and public policy lead for Eastern Africa, said they are targeting to register over 10 million students from colleges and universities from across the country within the next month under the programme.

“Our target is college and university students above 18 years, and we are looking forward to registering about 10 million students between now and next month.” Murungi said
