Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has paid an emotional tribute to Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, describing him as a selfless man whose passionate love for his country could never be taken away.

Obasanjo, a longtime friend of Raila and his family, said their bond grew stronger over the years due to the shared ideals they both believed in.

He eulogised Raila as a true statesman who exemplified understanding, tolerance, love, and accommodation, qualities every leader should emulate in the pursuit of national unity.

“It’s a lesson for all of us in Africa, a lesson of understanding, tolerance and love, accommodation and a lesson that our nation and continent is bigger than any individual and a group of individuals”, he said.

“We have deepened our friendship, brotherhood by working together for our nations, Africa and the world. Over the years, I have come to know Raila very well. One thing you couldn’t take away from him is his passionate love for his country and Africa, and that is what made our relationship grow from strength to strength”, he added.

He revealed that a meeting held in Mombasa, which led to the Handshake and the formation of a broad-based government, symbolised the spirit that Raila always stood for.

“The meeting we had in Mombasa, which brought Raila and Raila together, which led you to make room for ODM and other parties in your government. This is what makes this day pleasant. It’s a lesson for all of us in Africa, a lesson of understanding, tolerance, love, accommodation and a lesson that our nation and continent is bigger than any individual and a group of individuals”, he said Sunday during the state funeral service in Bondo, Siaya county.

He further highlighted Raila’s sense of humour, even in the darkest times.

“What I liked about Raila was his sense of humour, no matter how serious the situation would be, he would turn the attention to something to laugh about. I have lost a brother, friend and a confidant and more so, a co-worker in the vineyard of Africa”. He said.
