Television journalist Zubeidah Kananu was re-elected on Saturday to serve another term as President of the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG).

She retained her position after receiving 72 votes, defeating her challenger Yvonne Okwara, who garnered 58 votes in a closely contested race. The election was overseen by Sophie Kaibiria, an advocate of the High Court.

Kananu expressed her gratitude to the members for their overwhelming support and the trust they have placed in her to continue leading the Guild.

“This renewed mandate is more than a personal milestone—it is a collective endorsement of the values we uphold and the vision we share for a stronger, more resilient, and independent media industry in Kenya. Thank you for your confidence, your belief in our mission, and your steadfast support,” she stated.

Kananu affirmed her commitment to serving the Guild, noting that her victory has strengthened her resolve to advocate for media freedom and editorial independence.

“Over the past term, we have journeyed together through both challenges and triumphs—raising our voices to defend press freedom, promote ethical journalism, and champion the welfare and safety of our colleagues. Your support and solidarity have been the backbone of every step we’ve taken,” she added.

Francis Openda will serve as her deputy, having been elected unopposed during the nominations.

In conceding defeat, Okwara said while she had hoped for a different outcome, gracefully accepts the outcome and remained proud of the support she received from fellow editors.

“My candidacy was never about winning for its own sake. It was about restoring something that matters- our voice, our standards and our shared future. That work continues. I remain your colleague, your ally and your friend in this profession,” she said, while wishing those elected well in their service to the Guild.

During the Special General Meeting, KBC Radio journalist Agnes Mwangangi was elected as a Council Member for Radio at the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG). She received 65 votes, surpassing Toepista Nabusoba, who received 59 votes.

“I am both elated and grateful to have been elected as a Council Member. I also feel humbled, as this position provides me with an opportunity to serve those who believe in a new dawn!” said Mwangangi after being declared the winner.
