Doctors in Kiambu County have called off their strike following the signing of a deal between the County Government, the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMDU) and the Council of Governors.
Speaking in Nairobi after a consultative meeting between the three bodies KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah urged the doctors to resume work on Monday next week.
The Kiambu doctors have been on strike for 150 days since the 26th of May this year. A return to work formula addressing the doctor’s grievances and setting clear timelines for implementation was key in resolving the strike.
KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah says Kiambu County has made considerable progress in addressing the union’s concern by engaging an extra 90 doctors and 200 nurses.
Council of Governors Whip Muthomi Njuki revealed that both parties have agreed that Kiambu County Government will pay one month‘s salary to the striking workers immediately upon their resuming duty, together with the October salary.
He further said the pending three months’ salaries will be paid in the next financial year 2026/2027. In the meantime, the County Government of Kiambu will reinstate the deduction and remittance of union dues immediately.
The group further agreed that there will be no victimization whatsoever by the employer to the members who took part in the ongoing strike. 272 doctors out of 370 were not on strike.
COG Health Chairperson Abdulswamad Nassir has in the meantime urged leaders to stop politicizing matters of health.
