Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary, Mithika Linturi, says maize farmers across the country are expecting a bumper harvest following the successful fertilizer distribution by the government.

However, following concerns that some farmers were not able to access the subsidized commodity due to high transport costs, Linturi has directed the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) to open new selling centers closer to the people and employ temporary staff to man these centers.

Linturi said the government is also working on engaging approved agro-vets across the country to help distribute the fertilizer.

Addressing the National Assembly’s Public Investment Committee on Social Services, Administration and Agriculture chaired by Emanuel Wangwe, the CS pointed out that the temporary officers will be key in the distribution of the subsidized fertilizer ahead of the short rains season.
