Maralal Camel Derby puts Samburu on world tourism map

Samburu Governor Lati Lelelit has hailed the Maralal International Camel Derby as a flagship cultural and sporting event that continues to place northern Kenya on the global tourism map.

Speaking during the 30th edition of the annual derby, Governor Lelelit said the event, which has run successfully for over three decades, remains Africa’s only camel racing festival, attracting visitors from across the world.

“The Maralal International Camel Derby is an annual event that has been here for the last 32 years, which has put Maralal on the global map,” he said.

“This product markets northern Kenya as a tourism destination, and we are very proud.”

He added that the county is keen to expand the festival’s reach this year to showcase local culture, cuisine, and artisanal crafts while boosting the region’s economic fortunes.

Governor Lelelit commended the national government for consistently supporting Samburu County to host the event, noting that the partnership has been instrumental in sustaining the derby’s growth.

“We welcome everybody around the world to the Maralal International Camel Derby,” he said.

The annual event attracted over 30,000 visitors for camel races, cultural performances, traditional cuisine, and artisanal markets.
