He was speaking at Kiamaiko Street in Mathare, Nairobi, when he visited the area on Monday to assess the flood situation and visit victims who were displaced by heavy rains.

At the same time, President Ruto announced that each affected family will be given KSh10,000 to find alternative accommodation for three months.

“We have identified 40,000 families affected by the floods in Nairobi. We will give each family KSh10,000,” said President Ruto.

He said the affected families will be given priority in the distribution of 20,000 affordable houses, which will be announced soon for construction.

He thanked Kenyans for heeding the government’s call for those in river reserves to move to safer areas.

Saying that climate change is causing the current situation, President Ruto has urged Kenyans to increase tree planting across the country.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to plant 15 billion trees within 10 years as part of efforts to combat the effects of global warming and climate change.

“We will work closely with social organizations in cleaning and planting trees along the Nairobi River,” the President said.

He pointed out that 1 billion shillings will be used in the construction of new schools and classrooms that have been damaged by floods in Nairobi.
